Devon Petersen wins Western Cape Regional Ranking Competition
I’ve often been asked what happened to the South African darts sensation Devon Petersen, and why he’s not been on our TV screens recently (and I’ve missed his dancing too!). Devon’s a great chap, but has had some injury problems to get over.. well he’s back playing competitive darts now, and he’s back winning! I hope it will be the start of him coming back to take his place on the PDC Pro tour again soon.
The 8th Western Cape Regional Ranking Tournament (RRT) saw Devon Petersen claimed victory on his return to competitive darts with hard fought 6-5 defeat of Graham Filby in Sunday’s final .
The day started well for Devon with brilliant wins against Clint Prime (former South African Springbok) and Roger Bowers in the group stages. He then overcame Oscar Jacbos 6-2 in last-16 and narrowly winning Brent Robertson 6-5 in the quarter-final.
Devon then ended Nolan Arendse (who beat Charl Pietersen and Charles Losper both former South African Master Champions) with a 6-3 win in the semi-finals to set-up a final against Graham Filby, in what was to prove a high-quality match.
Graham Filby (Gauteng Classic Champion and former Maseru Champion) who has won two of the previous seven RRT’s progressed to final with a 6-3 win against Warrick Scheffer quarter-finals, before narrowly winning Craig Williams 6-5 in the semi-finals.
Devon dominated the opening legs of final taking a commanding 5-2 lead, but Graham fought back brilliantly to level the match 5-5 hitting 180 in each of the 3 legs. Graham had a brilliant chance in the final leg to close 82 to win the match by hitting bulls-eye with his first dart, but missed remaining two chucks on double 16.
Devon, though, professionally stepped up to the oche and closed 48 with two darts. After the game he dedicated this win to his former coach and mentor Russel Mains who passed away earlier this year.
